About this oil:
This small oil painting (8 × 8 inches) is an impressionistic meditation on place, movement, and quiet human connection, set against the iconic presence of the San Francisco de Asís Church near Taos, New Mexico. A woman and child walk home together, their figures suggested rather than defined, allowing gesture, posture, and rhythm to carry the emotional weight of the scene.
Like many artists, I’ve long been drawn to this church—not only for its deep cultural and spiritual resonance, but for its remarkable architecture. The building’s mass resolves into abstracted planes and strong geometry, shifting subtly with changes in light and atmosphere. In this piece, those forms become a framework for exploring color relationships and balance rather than architectural precision.
The primary challenge was to keep the painting loose and fresh while still honoring the structure of the church and the intimacy of the figures. I focused on expressive brushwork and simplified shapes, letting edges soften and merge, while introducing small but deliberate pops of color to enliven the surface and guide the eye. The limited scale demanded restraint—saying just enough to suggest the scene without overworking it.
Ultimately, the painting is less about literal depiction and more about mood: the feeling of walking home at day’s end, the quiet companionship between adult and child, and the timeless presence of a place that continues to inspire artists through its simplicity, strength, and ever-changing color.
