About this oil:
 
Sometimes I create scenes from my imagination, other times a simple vignette in real life captures my attention and cries out to be painted. The latter was the case with this horse at a roping event in Colorado. 
 
There was just something about the utter calm of this guy, waiting for his rider to return, that captured my heart. His calm demeanor belied the utter explosion of energy he would display in the roping ring just a few short minutes later. 
 
The challenge here was keeping the background as simple as possible so that your attention would lay solely on the horse. I also wanted to highlight the piece as a calming, quiet whole. The actual background was a chaos of fences, banners and noisy people, so I simply chose to ignore all of that in favor of this more monochromatic, simple backdrop.
