About this oil:

This 8 × 8 inch oil painting is an impressionistic interpretation of a quiet human exchange unfolding near the San Francisco de Asís Church outside Taos, New Mexico. Three figures have gathered in conversation, their presence modest against the monumental geometry of the adobe structure. Rather than being the focal point, the people act as a gentle counterpoint to the church—small, animated notes of life set against an architecture that feels timeless and grounded.

Like many artists, I have long been enamored with this church, particularly the way its massive adobe walls resolve into simplified planes of color and shape. The building’s form lends itself naturally to abstraction: broad surfaces catch and reflect light differently throughout the day, shifting from warm earth tones to cooler, shadowed hues. In this painting, those architectural planes are emphasized through loose brushwork and subtle color modulation, allowing the structure to feel solid yet alive.

The challenge was to keep the painting fresh and spontaneous while still conveying the weight and presence of the church. I worked to maintain a sense of immediacy—letting brushstrokes remain visible, edges soften, and colors mingle—while introducing small, intentional pops of color that enliven the surface and guide the viewer’s eye through the composition. The figures are suggested rather than detailed, defined more by gesture and relationship than by individual features, reinforcing the sense of an informal, passing conversation.

Ultimately, the painting is as much about atmosphere as it is about place. It reflects a moment of connection—between people, between architecture and landscape, and between history and the present—set within a site that continues to inspire through its simplicity, strength, and ever-changing color.
