About this Oil:
Life is so much better when we are surrounded by real friends.
My own friends, the real ones, have been right there beside me through thick and thin. We support each other, help out when things don't go so well, give encouragement, and even call "B.S" on the other when it becomes necessary. I've known horses my whole life, and it occurred to me that they are this way as well. They rely on their friends for safety, companionship, love, and support just as much as we do. In that way, we are more alike than not.
These two horses, a Percheron and an older Hackney pony, were on a farm close to where my sister (and best friend) lived at the time. I noticed that, even though there were several other horses in the pasture, these two always hung out together just like you see them here. At first glance they might seem unlikely pals, but horses rarely care as much about looks as we do.
The joy of this painting for me was accurately capturing the time of day where the sun was rising - Golden Hour. Over the course of several layers I built up color, then muted it a little on the next layer, until the right balance was achieved. A little blue and turquoise scattered in the shadowed grasses added just the final "pop" at the end.
