About this oil:
Two beautiful white horses kick up their heels in this study in grays.
This piece challenged me every step of the way. It is unusual for me to paint a piece in shades of gray -- I love color and love to use it to make a piece exciting and energetic. But here, I had to find other ways to bring excitement and energy into the piece because I knew from the outset I wanted to limit the range of colors I used.
The energy in the piece came from not only the horses' dynamic poses but in the paint application as well. I used long, strong brushwork to heighten a sense of movement, and intentionally kept details to a minimum.
The color in this piece was not so easy for me to master. The grays are not simply black mixed with white, which would result in a very cold-looking painting lacking in depth, but include small amounts of yellow ochre, burnt sienna (a muted red), teals, and blues. Adding in these colors to the grays gave them more depth and interest, even while maintaining an overall monochromatic color scheme.
