About this oil:
What the Wind Knows is a commissioned oil painting inspired by a profoundly meaningful encounter between the collector and a hawk—an experience she described as deeply spiritual and transformative. For her, the hawk was not simply a bird, but a messenger: a moment of insight and connection that carried lasting significance. This painting grew out of my desire to honor that experience with sensitivity, respect, and intention.
From the beginning, I wanted the piece to feel expansive and weightless, as if the hawk were held by the sky itself. Rather than portraying raw speed or aggression, I focused on a sense of trust and elevation—open wings, lifted posture, and an upward gaze that suggests receptivity to something beyond the visible world. The composition allows the bird to breathe within the space, reinforcing the idea that spiritual messages often arrive through openness rather than effort.
The surface of the painting is layered and atmospheric, built with soft transitions, scraped textures, and subtle tonal shifts that echo the invisible movement of air. Light plays an important role here, not as illumination from a single source, but as a presence—something felt throughout the painting. This approach helped convey the quiet power of spiritual communication: unseen, but unmistakably real.
Ultimately, What the Wind Knows is about listening—listening to intuition, to experience, and to the messages that come when we allow ourselves to be still enough to receive them. It reflects my belief that the spirit world often speaks through symbols in nature, and that animals like the hawk can serve as powerful reminders of guidance, perspective, and connection beyond ourselves.
