Oil on Canvas, 12in x 12in
Exhibited: The Breckenridge Gallery, Colorado
Thank you to the new collectors who purchased this work from The Breckenridge Gallery recently.
About this oil:
A roan stallion keeps everyone else in line.
Like his name, this strongly-built bay roan was the boss of the 20 or so other horses in the herd the day I visited. He was also intent on keeping himself between my truck and all of his charges.
This high-key piece ended up being a lot of fun to paint. I laid in the few darks first, then put in the middle tones on the horse's belly and in the background using more expressive brushwork. The one thing that surprised me was that, in order for the bare dirt at the bottom of the painting to look right to my eye, it needed to be a mix of pinks and oranges. Adding blues and purples in the shadows popped up the color in the piece even more.
